Seniors Being Their Authentic Selves

I am a senior, and, if you are a Boomer or a silent generation representative, you can relate to the following more than say, someone from Generation Y, because you were there, and you are here reading this in your ripe years. In our hay days, we risked lives to battle racism in the sixties by putting our bodies on the line to register voters. We marched and sang and advocated against segregation. In those moments of courage and conscience, we did more justice to life than the majority of us have done in the rest of it.

However, we also grew hair and burned our draft cards on campus during the sixties; we toked, and boogied our way through the seventies, and even voted for Reagan and presumed greed is good in the eighties. It is because every generation’s outlook on life stems from the social and economic situation in which they grow up. Today, we the Boomers still constitute 24% of the U.S. population, and more importantly can still contribute and be productive.

It is pertinent to mention that the authentic self is an objective for all four generations alive today: Millennials, Xers, the aging Seniors, and Boomers. It means something marginally different for each age and it unfolds over time. However, authenticity is inseparably linked to happiness.

To be authentic is to be at home in your body, accepted into a specific group, and to feel true to your sense of values. It is a type of confidence that does not come from achieving something outside of ourselves. It is realizing deep in our hearts that we are good enough in light of our feelings, needs, and skills and that we are contributing to the greater whole of life and matter.

Remember, authenticity is the regular practice of letting go of whom we imagine we are expected to be, and embracing who we are actually. To be your authentic self-means nurturing the capability to be imperfect, allowing ourselves to be vulnerable, and setting boundaries.

9 Ways to Be Your Authentic Self as a Senior or Boomer

  1. Keep an alignment between what you feel and want and what you say and do.
  2. Make value-based choices when considering intuition, research, and the bigger picture.
  3. An activity for old age is to do something different every day that reflects your deepest wishes, wants, and values.
  4. Aging should not stop you from speaking up for yourself and ask for what you want.
  5. Do not put up with abuse of any type.
  6. Give up altering your behavior by the desire to be liked by everyone.
  7. Express and maintain your boundaries, particularly about the level of energy you can handle taking in or being around.
  8. Do not miss any opportunity to offer your love, kindness, and compassion.

What Are The Biggest Problems Boomers, Elders, and Seniors Currently Have?

Ability to pay bills

With inflation surging against the cost of living, it is becoming stiffer for those living on a fixed income to timely pay their bills. This is why the majority of boomers and senior people between ages 50 and 64 are awakening to the reality of delayed retirement to sustain their current standard of living. For those elderly souls who own a home, there is the added concern to be able to use their home’s equity as supplemental income to social security. However, with more risks and scams, older people are having a tough time figuring out how to protect themselves and also afford a decent living.

Stop Acting Your Age Says: Listen, all you boomers and senior people! Take heart and hop on to the internet. There is so much you can give back to the world while reaping gains out of it. For instance, there are fantastic online marketplaces such as Airbnb, and Couch-surfing to rent your spare bedrooms, and to host guests from across the globe. Moreover, there are services such as where you can teach your first language all around the world. Lastly, there is YouTube to make videos and tutorials about whatever life experience you have amassed over the years.

Health Issues

Today, many silent generation elderlies are left incapacitated despite living longer as increases in longevity are flanked by increases in disability. These problems and woes are certainly not going away especially since the majority of boomers are still relatively young and healthy. I can only hope that social security and Medicare will continue to be available for them and for the Generation Y, and Millennials when their time comes.

Stop Acting Your Age Says: You know folks, an excellent activity for old age is to consistently find activities that genuinely keep you engaged. For instance, find or assemble your close group of friends, and plan fitness regimes, movie nights, and the thrill of trying new eateries. Believe you me, you would feel 10 to 15 years younger once you will get into the habit. Of course, it goes without saying that you need to visit your doctor regularly to ensure all is well.

Fear of Being Alone

Often people get into or stay in relationships that are dissatisfying throughout their life because of their fear of being alone. As people age and experience a loss of spouse, partner, friends, and siblings, the fear of being alone aggravates. Psychologically speaking, the effects of prolonged loneliness can include depression, panic attacks, anxiety, phobias, drug and alcohol addiction, suicide, and chronic illnesses.

Stop Acting Your Age Says: I can quote what a specialist might tell you that cognitive therapy, pet therapy, and relaxation techniques are common treatments, especially with the silent generation cohort, but it is tough to find anything more effective than companionship. As mentioned above, you can start by embracing Couch-surfing. You would be hosting guests from all across the world while coming across perspectives you never knew existed.

Why Is Old Age Such a Belittled Condition

The elderly populace is large and is also growing because of the advancement of health care as well as education. The elderly are faced with various physical, psychological, as well as social role changes, which challenge their sense of self along with the capacity to live happily. Numerous people experience loneliness as well as depression as they age, either as a result of living all alone or because of a lack of close family connections and reduced ties with the culture of origin, which fails to contribute to the community activities actively.

Yes, I am old; I admit this freely and confidently. Even though I am about to turn 82, I feel extremely lucky. There are so many people out there who do not get to experience the golden old age as I have. The average worldwide life expectancy is 71. This means that half of the people pass away before this. So why is Old Age Such a Belittled Condition? It baffles me to think that mocking or belittling old people make others feel better about their lives.

It dismays me to see words like “oldsters” “senile” “overage” etc. being used to describe the elderly. Why is it not a big deal when one makes fun of old people? Why do people feel it is okay to mock old people? We are a large group of the entire population, and if you don’t feel comfortable mocking another large group of people, why us?

One could find hundreds and thousands of mems, blogs, and articles mocking old people. There have also been instances where people have made videos that are directed towards making fun of the elderly. If this is supposed to be funny, I believe that my sense of humor is not developed in a way to find these jokes funny.

As a nation, we need to stop this trend which traumatizes old people from making themselves feel better. It is very important that we understand, that everyone at one point in time has to turn old. No one remains young, active and healthy no matter how much we want to.

Old age is the inevitable part of life, which everyone has to go through. There is nothing belittling about it. One needs to understand that every stage of life has its advantages and disadvantages. There is nothing wrong with being in a certain age.

Aging is a series of progressions that begin with life and continues throughout the entire lifespan. It signifies the closing period in the life cycle, a time when the individual looks back on life, on the past accomplishments and then begins to finish off the course of his life. Adjusting to the vicissitudes, which accompany old age, requires the individual malleable and develops new coping skills in order to adapt to the various changes that are common to this particular time in their lives.

With their advancing age, it is unavoidable that old people lose connection with their old friends and that they find it more difficult to make new friends. Therefore, it is very important that instead of belittling the elderly, you take care of them and help them live a better life.

How Can Elders Break Old Habits and Walk a New Path?

First and foremost, I would say instead of grinding out old habits, channelize your energies toward creating new ones that are beneficial and nourishing. It will enable you to concentrate on the positive change by staying true to the life you want, rather than draining energies on getting rid of something you do not want. Gradually, breaking old habits will become a bi-product of progress towards creating your ideal senior life, as old habits will fall out because you would not need them anymore.

Here is what I did, and of course, you, my boomer juniors, and silent generation pals can do too!

What if you have never been quite active? Will starting now make any difference?

Yes. Physical activity is good for individuals of any age group. Typically, among older adults, falls are a common reason for injury and disability. You can prevent that through an appropriate physical activity for old age to make your bones and muscles stronger. Also, it will revitalize your brain.

For the majority of people, walking is one of the most convenient activities to do. Fitness experts suggest at least half an hour of physical activity on every alternate day of the week, but you do not have to do all of it at once. Try walking for 10-15 minutes twice a day, or for 8-10 minutes thrice each day.

Alternatively, you can try dancing or gardening. Go swimming or fishing. Moreover, yoga or Tai chi are examples of other types of activity for old age that are worth investing time to learn and practice.

Focus on prevention

You can break the old habit of being your own doctor by regularly visiting your practitioner. It is because having frequent doctor appointments at a senior age to check on health aspects such as heart problems, cholesterol, and blood pressure, can alert you of problems early on, making them more manageable.

Embrace Technology.

This is quite straightforward! I am 79 years old, so naturally, I did not grow up tweeting about the WWII. I thought typewriter was the most significant thing ever for people fond of writing. However, I learned, and today my social pages are brimming with digital vibrancy. Remember, you boomers, and especially the silent generation people, technology is here to stay, and you have to embrace it.

“Older folks stand to benefit the most. They can keep in touch through email, Skype and so forth. Also, older folks can learn a lot about health conditions and medications on the Internet.”

Surround oneself with a positive social circle

Irrespective of your age, the social aspect of your life is critical to the quality of your being. It is because compassionate friends are necessary for your emotional health, and they can assist you to get through difficult phases and problems. Moreover, research reveals that senior Americans who are connected with their respective communities suffer from fewer health problems and maintain good health.

What Can A Senior Do To Embrace Where They Are And Consciously Create A Positive Plan For Their Life?

Life as a senior is tough, and with every proverbial tick of the clock, we observe new wrinkles, thinner hair, and more signs of ageing. Also, 24/7 news are littered with tornadoes, political uncertainties and law and order situations. Therefore, it is okay to believe in the prophecy of Nostradamus that the world is coming to an end!

However, it is not, and believe you me (I am from the silent generation, and have seen ages of actors), there is nothing more common in the Hollywood than wasted talent. According to a wellness coach, Elisabeth Scott, although we all come with a specific set point for certain personality traits such as agreeableness, openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, and neuroticism, we also have a lot of wiggle space.

In simpler words, we can consciously change our perceptions and cultivate different behavior and attitudes. Therefore, if you are reading this, the chances are high that goings are quite windy for you. Here is what I did, and all senior boomerscan do it too;

I embraced my life situation by venting out all my angst on a piece of paper, burned it, and arranged for a cremation of sorts. Also, that night I went to bed with optimism to bear the child of positive attitude.

Sounds silly?

It does not if you start waking up every day with “I am thankful for a new day.” instead of “I do not like getting up.” Remember, a positive attitude can bring you better health, happier relationships and more opportunities in life, compared to the lemons you would get with a perennially grouchy disposition.

Here is your new positive plan;

Encourage Technologies

The internet and social networking platforms are fantastic opportunities for the elderly, as more and more seniors are connecting via technology with family and friends. Also, online connections offer regular chances for your loved ones to check in on your mental, physical, and emotional well-being that is otherwise nearly impossible. Moreover, studies reveal that social networking sites that were once frequented primarily by Generation Y and Z are now progressively embraced by older adults.


A walk in the neighborhood, at your favorite park, or along the beach, is a great way to start the day. Additionally, to avoid monotony, merge walking with another activity like birdwatching, or letterboxing. If you have a smartphone, geocaching (much like letterboxing but with GPS) could be your thing.


Today, several communities are constructing bikeways along abandoned interurban railway lines. Therefore, your local parks can supply you with bike path locations and maps. Alternatively, you can look on Trail Link, to see if there are nearby paths.


A cursory online search will show numerous civic organizations and charities crying out for helping hands. Therefore, senior boomers like you, with lifelong experience and nous can always make changes happen in the following disciplines;

  • Hospitals
  • Nursing home visits
  • Tax preparation help
  • Community events
  • Museum
  • Library helper
  • Tourist attractions

Repetition and Focus

When you need to bolster your courage, when you need to get off your butt and go to work, when you need to overcome your own inertia or nervousness, repeat the following slogan to yourself over and over, making the intensity and urgency of your tone rise each time you say it until it becomes like a war cry — focus creates power! Focus creates power! Focus creates power! You’ll be up and moving!

In a sense, this is the principle that makes slogans work. By repeating the slogan over and over, you allow your mind to focus, like the sun through a magnifying glass. The sun could shine all day without changing a piece of paper lying on the ground. But use a magnifying glass to focus a lot of light on one little spot, and you’ll start to see something happen.

The most effective formula for success is: Pick one goal and think about it and work toward it all the time. Make it your Magnificent Obsession. There may be many things you want. Write them all down, but then choose one. Forget about the others for now. Choose one and make it your top priority, your most urgent daily obsession. Do this, and keep it up long enough, and success is practically guaranteed.

Use repetition of a slogan to maintain focus.

Tips for a Productive and Healthy New Year

It is officially 2020 and what a wonderous year it has been already. How have you been fairing so far?

I want to start 2020 off with some advice to help you have a productive and healthy year! We have been working hard in the background of Stop Acting Your Age: videos, courses, books, and programs. I love being able to share my knowledge with you. Let me help you! All right, let’s dive right into it!

I want to talk about a process which I call the 30 Day Detox for Creativity. This is a detox for your mind. You will be working on small tasks which will allow your creativity to thrive for this next year. You may not work in a field which you deem “creative” but creativity and innovation hide in every business, job, and career – even if you don’t realize it: accountants, fish mongers, artists, CEOs, etc. Each of these numbers represent one day in the 30 Day Detox system. Work on them for the rest of January:

  1. Find your professional goals for this year and write them down.
  2. Clean off your workspace.
  3. Delete the files on your computer which you consider to be unnecessary.
  4. I bet you have some unused media on your computer, website, and blog folders. Clean those out today!
  5. Look at your bios and resume. Refresh your information and make sure that it is all current.
  6. Clean out your email.
  7. Declutter your desk drawers, filing cabinets, and other spaces where clutter can hide in your workspace.
  8. Organize the project(s) that you are currently working on.
  9. Analyze projects that are pending for the future.
  10. Look at projects that you can say “No” to. Set the criteria for this for the future. What is too much for your current work load?
  11. Organize your client lists and your contacts.
  12. Clear out the things on your website which no longer fit your brand.
  13. Audit your service list on your website or your resume for skills that don’t involve work that you want to do in the future.
  14. Look at your brand image or the image that you are portraying at work. Is this how you want to be seen? What can you do to “fix” this image?
  15. Set up a financial plan for this year.
  16. Clean up your mission statement or find a motto for yourself this year.
  17. Clean out the apps and programs on your mobile devices.
  18. Donate clothes that you no longer wear or that you don’t fit your image.
  19. Donate other supplies that you no longer use.
  20. What are some personal goals that you want to accomplish this year? Write them down.
  21. Skim through the people that you are following on your social media. Wean off the profiles that you find negative or pessimistic.
  22. Unsubscribe from mailing lists that you don’t use.
  23. What is your planner/calendar system? Find one that works for you.
  24. What do you do for a daily task list? Find a system that works for you.
  25. Create a music playlist on your computer that promote the best work out of you. Also look at posting images around your office that help motivate you.
  26. Make health goals for yourself so that you stay physically healthy this year. Set up a simple plan to get this into motion.
  27. Look up some new profiles that you can follow on your social media. Look into: possible mentors, successful people in your field, and people that you look up to.
  28. Find a mentor in the position that you want to be in.
  29. Start a bucket list for your future.
  30. Set up some emergency situation plans: emergency kit at home, emergency fund at the bank, etc.

Take today to mull over the ideas and then spend the rest of January working on each of those tasks in order to cleanse your creative palate and ring in the new year with a productive and mentally healthy creative spirit!

Why You Need To Speak Up About Feeling Discriminated

If you are eighty years old, like me you would have by now felt the sting of age discrimination – otherwise known as Ageism.

There are many occasions when I have felt the slash of discrimination against me because I’m an old man.

Here are some situations that show what age discrimination looks like:

  1. Sally, aged 60, found out she didn’t get a promotion she was more than qualified for. Instead, the company gave it to a woman aged 25, with a lot less experience and fewer qualifications.
  2. Alan, aged 56, was informed by his boss that he was let go because of budget cutbacks. Yet, he also found out that he was the only person in the office who’d lost his job.
  3. Gabriel, aged 65, applied for the post of a bus driver and was surprised to find that there was an age restriction. And even though he has a perfect driving record he was not given the job.

Here are the facts…

The Oxford dictionary defines discrimination as follows:

“The unjust treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex.”

As seniors, we have the skills and the abilities to perform any day to day tasks. So, if any individual makes you feel like you are not worth it, because of your age, it is high time that you took a stand. We’ve spent a lot of blood, sweat and tears getting where we are today.

The longer we endure this injustice, the more we are going to get treated like we don’t matter. We have a huge reservoir of knowledge which would be beneficial for any organization. And if we have the required expertise, why are we not considered for those jobs.

We deserve to be treated fairly and equally.

Once we start to defend ourselves, it will become clear to all those discriminating against us that, like the famous line from the movie ‘Network’, “We’re mad as hell and we’re NOT going to take it anymore!”

The western society has been described the phenomenon of the population aging as a ‘burden’ and a ‘problem’. This has been going on since the beginning of the 20th century. There is enough evidence using which we could prove that the modernized western society is highly ageist. The elderly are mostly perceived to be stereotypically rigid in their thought process and old-fashioned in their values. Concurrently, the elderly are perceived to hold negative thoughts regarding themselves and their surroundings.

All these various different perceptions, most of them false, lead to the various ethical issues the elderly face today. The ethical issues might be in relation to their health care or just care in general. It disappoints me when I see all ethical boundaries being crossed and words like ‘oldsters’ ‘overaged’ and ‘ senile’ being used to describe us.

What surprises me, even more, is the fact that these ethical issues are not even considered to be that big of a deal. Why is it not a big deal when the caregivers make fun of the elderly and various problems they face? Why is it considered to be normal when someone makes fun of the elderly? We make a huge group of the entire population. We deserve just as much respect and care as other age groups.

In the United States of America, all of us live in an extremely age ghettoized society and have come to view the old age as despicable. However, the process is just as normal and inevitable as all the others. Those who believe that those in their sixties are nonproductive and a burden on the society should actually strive towards improving their ethical and moral values. We the elderly are a treasure trove of knowledge and when treated with kindness we can become one of your best friends.

Respect is a very important part of all cordial relationships. If you understand the meaning of disrepute, you would be able to distinguish respect in a better manner. Disrespecting someone means that you have no ethical values towards the person you are disrespecting. Numerous people do not value the elderly they have in their lives and treat them like inferiors. Showing respect to the elderly means to be kind along with understanding towards them. Simply hearing them out even when you do not agree with them can make their day!

On New Year’s Resolutions and S.M.A.R.T. Goals

Heaven Hi and Happy New Year!

How has your 2020 been so far?

Today I wanted to talk about New Year’s resolutions because there’s nothing that I love more than a healthy and achievable goal. 2020 has already started but that doesn’t mean that it is too late to start or modify the goals that you have for this year.

The term “New Year’s resolution” has a bad connotation associated with it. Mainly people use it as a term which is interchangeable with “goals that I won’t be able to achieve.” Well, here’s where we will make a difference.  No more unachievable goals!

#1) Career

Goals that have to do with your professional life or your career can seem the most ambitious. These goals will often have the words “promotion”, “money”, and “owner”. However, the most thoughtful, impactful – and also difficult – goals involve the word “happy”.

Being happy at work is one of the most powerful tools you can have and will get you where you need to be. Once you find your passion at your job/career, you will find the drive that will get you that promotion and/or raise.

#2) Personal Life

When it comes to matters of the heart, it is often said that things should be left up to fate. While I believe that you can’t force love, I also believe these truths:

  1. You have to work at a relationship and nourish it in order for it to thrive.
  2. You can’t love someone else if you can’t love yourself first.
  3. Personal growth is the best way to keep a relationship from getting boring.

If you want to fall in love, become a better partner, and/or save your relationship, remember to keep these truths in your mind at all times.

#3) Health

The more common resolutions are health-related. There are achievement style resolutions (“To be able to run a 7 minute mile”) and more general resolutions (“Look good naked”, “Stop getting yelled at by my physicians”). When it comes to health-related resolutions, the biggest motivator is to make a goal that is measurable. Actively watching your progress is incredibly empowering.

#4) S.M.A.R.T. Goals

The single, most important tip that I can give you about creating goals and resolutions is to create SMART Goals:

S. Specific (Come up with goals that are specific so that you can create equally as specific game plans)

M. Measurable (Be able to collect data in order to measure how well you are doing)

A. Achievable (Choose goals that you will be able to control or are within your circle of influence)

R. Relevant (Make sure that this goal is relevant to your life and passions)

T. Time Bound/Sensitive (Come up with short term goals that can be completed within four months in order to achieve your resolution
